Guided Imagery for Relaxation

Guided Imagery, or visualization, is a relaxation and stress reduction technique which has been gaining a great deal of popularity recently, even though its concepts have been used for centuries. It is not hard to learn and can be performed by anyone with just a little training.

Guided Imagery Techniques

The basic concept behind guided imagery and visualization is that there is a strong link between your mental processes and your physical being. Allowing your mind to fully relax can also produce a positive reaction in your body. These physical benefits can include a reduction blood pressure, lower cortisol levels and a slower heartbeat. One simple Guided Imagery technique is as follows:

  1. Sit comfortably in a quiet environment where you won’t be disturbed.
  2. With your eyes closed, take several deep, cleansing breaths.
  3. Form a mental picture in your mind of a scene which you find relaxing, perhaps a tropical beach, a forest or riverbank. It doesn’t particularly matter what you choose, so long as it is somewhere you feel safe and completely at ease.
  4. Keep adding details to your basic mental picture in order to make it as complete as possible. It’s important to try to involve all of your senses, for example if you were picturing lying in a forest, concentrate on the smell of the leaves, the feel of the soft earth beneath you and the sounds of the birds in the trees. The more involving your imaginary world becomes, the better the technique will work.
  5. After a few minutes (or as long as you like), open your eyes and slowly return to the ‘real world’. You should now feel much more relaxed and energized.

Another effective guided imagery technique is to concentrate on your body, rather than a mental picture. First, focus your attention on your toes, tensing and then relaxing them, then move on to your feet, legs and so on; imagining your whole body relaxing as you go.

The beauty of guided imagery is in its simplicity. You don’t need a therapist to help you, and it can be performed almost anywhere and at any time. However, if you find it difficult to obtain the necessary state of mind for the visualization process, there are many audio CDs on the market which you may find useful. They combine relaxing music and vocal instructions to guide you on your journey.

When you feel under stress it can be hard to take time out to try and deal with it. Using guided imagery as a relaxation technique allows you to quickly and easily take a step back from your problems and approach them again with a clear mind.

Help Anxiety by Balancing Blood Sugar Levels


One of the often overlooked causes of anxiety, panic attacks, and mood problems is imbalanced blood sugar. Some people may see it as diabetes (hyperglycemia – high blood sugar), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and/or insulin resistance. As sugar levels swing high and low, the body blasts out adrenaline (epinephrine) and cortisol to balance blood sugar levels so the brain doesn’t starve of glucose. How can balancing blood sugar help anxiety? 

By balancing sugars levels, adrenal hormones adrenalin and cortisol levels aren’t all over the map. This also allows the adrenals to rest as well as lessen anxiety because high levels of adrenaline circulating around. Panic attacks and anxiety is very common especially when blood glucose (sugar) levels are low since it’s the adrenaline and cortisol that raise levels to safe levels.

Most of the panic attacks and anxious feelings I experienced were due to hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) episodes. It only took six long months to figure this out! When I hit 39 (very low number!) during my 6 hour glucose tolerance test my doc said “Yep, you have SEVERE hypoglycemia!”. Eating correctly to balance blood sugar levels and taking supplements to fill nutritional voids was how I stopped the relentless 24/7 panic and anxiety.

Because I get asked so often, I’m going to share how I eat for blood sugar balance. Everybody is different, so each individual will have to experiment to see what works for them. I also use a glucose meter to check my levels first thing in the morning, before and after a meal, in-between meals, and before bed. My system may seem simple, but it works for me.

Jen Crippen’s Blood Sugar Balancing Strategy:

  • BREAKFAST: It is important to eat something within a 1/2 hour of waking. If not, the body runs on adrenalin to keep blood sugar levels up until a meal is consumed. This is very taxing on the adrenals. I eat a high fat/protein meal with a tiny bit of low glycemic carbs to get me going. For example: apple (CARB) with raw almond butter (FAT & PROTEIN; eggs (FAT & PROTEIN) with carrots (CARB), tomato (CARB); low glycemic protein smoothie (CARB & PROTEIN) with added coconut oil (FAT) and raw egg (FAT & PROTEIN)
  • MID-MORNING SNACK: Something light and protein rich like a handful of almonds (FAT & PROTEIN) with Ningxia Wolfberries (CARB) or 1 hard boiled egg
  • LUNCH: Nice substantial meal with veggies, protein, and substantial fat. For example: tuna salad (PROTEIN) with celery, tomato (CARB), natural food mayo (FAT); spring green salad with 2 hard boiled eggs (FAT & PROTEIN), green peppers, scallions, carrot (CARB), sunflower seeds (FAT & PROTEIN), oil & vinegar dressing, couple of Ningxia Wolfberries (CARB); hamburger (PROTEIN) with small spring green salad
  • AFTERNOON SNACK: Again, something light and protein rich.
  • DINNER: Dinner I always have a heavy protein (seafood, meat, poultry) along with green vegetables (spinach, broccoli, chard, green beans) and a starchy vegetable for carbohydrates (root vegetables, sweet potato, squash). Very rarely will I eat any grains, but when I do it’s quinoa, black rice, or teff.
  • AN HOUR BEFORE BEDTIME SNACK: This snack is very important because often my blood sugar levels would plummet overnight and give me restless sleep or nightmares. Sometimes I will have a bit of the leftovers from dinner in a very small portion or even a smoothie. I keep it very light and total volume of food is normally about a 1/2 to 3/4 cup.

As for drink, I typically have water or non-caffeinated tea (herbal). I don’t drink soda of any kind and rarely drink alcohol. Alcohol creates a sugar swinging nightmare! Also, anything with caffeine creates blood sugar havoc because of the adrenaline surge. So it’s best to avoid with blood sugar, anxiety, panic, and/or adrenal issues.There is a lot more to my strategy on how to eat to help anxiety. There are many secrets such as portion size of carbs to protein and fat, getting off soda, and how to enjoy sweets without the blood sugar and anxiety consequence!

Sometimes we can feel a little down for no particular reason. Or maybe we just got into an argument with someone or we didn’t get what we wanted. Or perhaps we just woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day. Whatever it is, it’s crucial we get right back up as fast as we can. Not to sit and stay there too long.

Here are a few things you can do to bring yourself up to your higher optimal self. To get yourself feeling better pronto!

15 Things To Do To Take Care Of Yourself:

  1. Take deep breaths
  2. Smile
  3. Laugh
  4. Sing
  5. Dance
  6. Exercise
  7. Meditate
  8. Get up and stretch your body
  9. Go for a nice walk
  10. Connect with nature
  11. Feel your emotions
  12. Socialize and talk with positive people
  13. Spend time with children or animals
  14. Do something unexpected and nice for someone
  15. Do the things that give you joy

These are just some ideas. There are lots more. And you probably have more of your own on what you do that lifts you up. Whatever it is, as long as it is to your highest good and well-being, do it. Get up and get going. You have too much to live for to be feeling bad.

Empaths and the Shadow – Overcoming Darkness by Creating Light

Empaths understand, as walkers between worlds, the polarities of Darkness and Light.

Every single thought carries energy that affects ourselves as empaths and others. Empaths know and understand this unlike any other individuals, because we take the brunt of other people’s negativity. We feel it in our own energy fields.

Empaths often will hear the very not-so-nice words and literally experience the not-so-nice energy that has been created by others. The mere act of walking into a chaotic restaurant or department store is all that it takes (thus, empaths avoid crowded places like the plague).

Negative energy stays around. If left unchecked, it will accomplish its mission of advancement of the Darkness. One simple negative thought will linger unless we recant those words and take responsibility for our own karmic negativity.

If we do not face the Shadow side and learn to become friends with it, then we will never learn to grow past it, nor be of any real help to others. The shadow side is an invitation to create Light. It can NEVER be changed or altered by merely ignoring it or by running away (which empaths tend to be very good at). The Shadow and Darkness are strong signals that we need to do everything in our power to Create Light.

The goal of the work I do is to teach empaths to be better Light Creators. It is our responsibility to ourselves and to others. Creating Light is done through pure prayer, patience, and finding others who are stronger on which to temporarily rely. We cannot accomplish our Collective task as humans and as empaths unless we help each other. That means asking for help when you know you need it – putting aside your ego. I struggled for many years by myself in isolation, thinking that I had to do it all myself. Only when I dropped that belief did I receive the help that I needed, and get to a place where I now am thriving and not a victim anymore.

It’s my belief that empaths have asked for this experience, and here we are Now with a job to do. Accumulated negativity (otherwise known as Karma) is never altered unless we have a stronger Light energy to absorb it and transmute it. Thus, the power of prayer and intention.

Prayer from a pure and humble heart is strong enough to erase and diminish any negative energy. However, many times it will take years to be enough to overcome the Darkness. This is the not-so-fun aspect of Karma, and of being an empath, sucking up everyone else’s negativity. And yet with patience, it WILL be overcome. That is a Universal truth.

I write these words to offer you encouragement to endure and persevere over whatever hardships that are currently Testing you. There is nothing that is strong enough to break you, unless you let it. And if you let it, then you may just get to come back into an earthly body again and do it all over again, until you get it right.

Go for broke this time. You’re an empath with a job to do.

Face you shadow – clean yourself up. And most importantly, ask for help! This time, let’s all get it right!

Here are some solutions to clearing negative energy we found useful. Everyone is different, so try them out to see which ones work better for you.

The number one key is to STAY GROUNDED in your body. This means getting regular exercise, eating nutritional food, and cutting out overstimulating things in your life.

Clearing Negative Energy In Your Environment:
1. Smudging your home with sage.
2. Doing Meditation and taking deep breaths.
3. Strategically placing bowls of sea salt in your home to protect you from entrance of negative energy. The salt acts as an absorbent to negative energy.
4. Using protective stones and crystals. Some good protective stones that repel negative energy are Onyx and Obsidian. While Amber and black tourmaline acts more like absorbers.  And Amethyst is considered a healing stone. So you may also want to consider wearing protective stone jewelry. (Just remember to clean the stones regularly with sea salt and water.)
5. Physically clean the place. This removes the old energy and keep the place in high vibration.

Elevating Your Personal Energy and Grounding Yourself:
1. Take a nice warm shower.
2. Take a nice bath using Epsom Salt. Epsom Salt is to help you cut the psychic connection with others so that they are no longer pulling you. Plus, it helps your tired body relax.
3. Use essential oil or scent such as lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, etc. to calm and relax yourself.
4. Get a nice massage.
5. Meditate
6. Going outside for some sun.
7. Doing any type of physical activities that will help you stay grounded in your body. (e.g. Yoga, Tai Chi, martial art, jogging, boxing, exercise, or some kind of sports you enjoy, etc.)
8. Get some fresh air.
9. Connect with nature.
10. Going to ocean, forest, or mountain area also helps you rejuvenate.
11. Surrounding yourself around plants or trees of high energy.
12. Drink pure water. (Bless your water with positive energy before drinking it. And remember to thank it for purifying your body as you drink it.)
13. Eat proper balance nutritious meals.
14. Feel your emotions.
15. Take care of yourself.
